Travel: Edinburgh

Dear Readers,

First of all, I LOVE EDINBURGH. I have been so lucky to spend so much time there over the past few months! A few times each semester I have had classes there, plus I have gone a few times to explore with friends. Each time I have done something completely different. Despite Glasgow and Edinburgh only being an hour apart, the two cities are soooo different. Edinburgh has a lot of the touristy Scottish elements in comparison to Glasgow. Since I have been so many times, and for different reasons I thought I would put together a list of my favourite things to do and see in Edinburgh.Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

  1. National Portrait Gallery. For any art lover or history buff, the National Portrait Gallery is fantastic. They have such a great collection of Tudor & Stuart portraits. Processed with VSCO with a6 presetIMG_9520
  2. Calton Hill. If you aren’t up for hiking Arthur’s seat Calton Hill is another great view of the city. It is just a walk up a hill of an elevation of 103m!Processed with VSCO with a6 presetIMG_6822
  3. The Elephant House. If you are a Harry Potter fan this is a must-see. This is the cafe where J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter at the Philosopher’s Stone!!!! Inside there are all these notes written in the tables for Rowling talking about visitor’s love for Harry Potter and the entire magical world she created. Processed with VSCO with a6 preset
  4. Grave Yard. This graveyard, just behind the Elephant Cafe is where J.K. Rowling found names for her characters! Tom Riddle’s Grave is even in here, which is one of the most visited graves in the world. IMG_9713Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

  7. Arthur’s Seat. I have only hiked it once but it has a great view of the city on a nice day! It was a great little adventure (even in the rain). Check out my post just on Arthur’s seat here!Processed with VSCO with a6 preset
  8. The Royal Mile. The Royal Mile is the main strip in old town which leads from Hollyroad Palace up to the Edinburgh Castle. This strip is definitely the most touristy part of the city, but it still worth seeing. The buildings are beautiful, and there is often at least one bagpiper out. Processed with VSCO with a6 preset
  9. Edinburgh Castle. Originally built in the 12th century, next to Stirling Castle this is the most important Castle in Scotland. The Royal Jewels are also held here!!Processed with VSCO with a6 presetProcessed with VSCO with a6 preset
  10. Rose Street. An area in New Town that is filled with great pubs and restaurants. 19014C34-F4E8-42C4-9B98-491F00124036.jpg

Even though I love Edinburgh, I’m very happy to be living in Glasgow. It is so cool that two fantastic yet so very different cities are only about an hour apart Edinburgh is 100% worth visiting if you are ever passing through Scotland!
