Dear Readers,
So as of today I have officially lived in Glasgow for three weeks, and so far everything is absolutely fantastic. When I moved to Sweden, everything was wonderful at the beginning but still a little overwhelming, and I have yet to feel overwhelmed in the slightest. The only thing is, occasionally some people’s Scottish accents are so thick it is hard to understand what they are saying, so I just nod my head and smile.
The city is even easy to get around, well at least the West End and the City Centre (I’m still in the West End Bubble as they call it). The West End is the part of the city where the university is, and where I am living. The entire area is filled with great cafes, restaurants, shops, and bars. There are even three museums within 20 minutes walking distance from my door, my favourite thing in the world!!
The University of Glasgow is spectacular. My childhood dreams of studying at Hogwarts are basically coming true. The University itself was established in 1451 and is the fourth oldest english speaking university in the world. UofG was also awarded the title of best University in Scotland for this year! Surrounding the front side of the University is Kelvingrove Park, which is located along the river Kelvin. Everything is named “Kelvin” in honour of Lord Kelvin the Scottish-Irish physicist.
During the day the campus is always filled with students and tourists, rain or shine. The castle is really something to see, and I highly recommend if you are ever in Glasgow to go check it out. Once you graduate from the University you are allowed to step on the grass that is in the court yard, and if you are a graduate from the University you are allowed to get married there! There are two sections of the court yard that are separated by the cloisters in the middle.
In the building there are a few different departments, like the Adam Smith School of Business and Geology, The Huntarian Museum, a Chapel, the Postgrad Gilchrist club and so much more. One of my first nights there was a Scottish Caleigh in the main hall, which was filled with Scottish dance, music, food and drink.
The campus is the most photographic place in the city I have discovered so far, and I can not wait to see how the beauty of the campus changes over the year, especially when it snows!! I’m sure more photographs of the campus will be appearing on my Instagram in the future.
Love Always,
Laura
